This position can be filled with a Medical Assistant I or Medical Assistant II based on skills and years of experience.
General Summary:
Medical Assistant I:
This is an entry level role at a Medical Assistant into our Adult Specialty Clinics at National Jewish Health. The Medical Assistant I performs basic clinical activities in support of physician and nursing staff. It delivers safe and appropriate patient care, within the scope of practice and established policies and procedures, under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Medical Assistant II:
To promote efficient, high quality physician clinic practice by providing guidance and leadership through collaborating with the team to manage patient flow and communications. To deliver safe and appropriate patient care within the scope of practice and established policies and procedures, under direct the direct support of a Registered Nurse. A Medical Assistant II is expected to perform the responsibilities of a Medical Assistant I as well as those outlined below.

Essential Responsibilities:
Medical Assistant I:
  1. Assists with assuring a complete patient record by recording in software systems, vitals, (temperature, blood pressure, respiration, pulse) height and weight.
  2. Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
  3. Takes brief history and vital signs.
  4. Responsible for knowledge of software systems, including proper use of order/reports/charging and maximizing personal proficiency.
  5. Performs quality spirometry with consistency in Jaeger system. Maintains equipment with daily calibrations and appropriate use of the Jaeger system.
  6. Review charts and prepare for following day patient flow.
  7. Prepares exam and procedure rooms with necessary supplies.
  8. Gives injections, obtains specimens, performs venipunctures, and skin testing.
  9. Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatment, including sterilization. Assists physicians in preparing for minor procedures or surgeries.
  10. Facilitates the scheduling of tests and treatments with front desk staff (schedulers) and central scheduling dept. Screens telephone calls for referral to physician.
  11. Follows protocol and process flow for prescription refills.
  12. Performs treatment as directed by the physician.
  13. Follows departmental policies and procedures.
  14. Performs Limited Scope x-rays and EKG's as directed.
  15. Updates patient files as appropriate.
  16. Attends required meetings. Reads and signs off on minutes when meeting conflicts with schedule or patient flow.
  17. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  18. Participates in professional development activities and internal/external customer service.
  19. May provide back-up support for front desk and other areas as a Medical Assistant.
  20. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Medical Assistant II:
  1. Collaborates with RN and physician to manage clinic practice: Implements plan for each clinic ahead of time to identify and anticipate potential problems; Monitors master schedule; Demonstrates ability to problem-solve effectively when unexpected patient flow issues arise; Pages physicians when patients are ready for their visit. Coordinates telephone communications with patients, families, referring providers, and other members of the health team; utilize follow-up system to assure care follow-up and coordination is accomplished.
  2. Contributes to the effectiveness of the assigned work area and the institution. Communicates appropriately to other staff members when leaving the clinic area.
  3. Ensures a complete patient record by recording into the Patient Record vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, respiration, pulse) height and weight, and other information as required. Assists in the orientation of new staff members
  4. Prepares exam and procedure rooms with necessary supplies.
  5. Collects and correctly labels blood specimens from adult and pediatric patients by venipuncture, fingerstick, or capillary techniques. Reports any adverse reactions to supervisor or nursing staff. Demonstrates skill in understanding & communicating financial implications of lab testing as required.
  6. Prepares specimens for analysis by centrifugation, separating specimens from red cells and other techniques required for distribution of the sample to the appropriate work areas. Processes paperwork correctly.
  7. Performs electrocardiograms (EKGs) on adult and pediatric patients as directed. Processes and files chart copies of these reports. Works with supervisor to monitor procedure activity.
  8. Responsible for knowledge about computer systems in department, including proper use of order/reports/charging and maximizing personal proficiency. Supports and is aware of research projects in work area.
  9. Performs as backup to staff absences and vacancies as necessary.
  10. Performs manual billing, error correction, photocopying and data entry as required.
  11. Provides appropriate education to patients/families utilizing effective teaching skills, and National Jewish supportive materials as directed by Registered Nurse while supporting National Jewish's philosophy of patient/family education.
  12. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
Medical Assistant I: Enters the profession with knowledge and skills acquired through education and its associated training. The ability to develop competencies to advance to a Medical Assistant II is required to be successful in this role.
Medical Assistant II: Excellent leadership skills through role modeling professional behavior and a high degree of customer service. Capacity to collaborate with other health care team members. Ability to plan ahead and anticipate potential problems and implement plans proactively to maintain clinic productivity. Ability to independently take initiative to problem-solve, and maintain an orderly patient flow through clinic.
Education:
Successful graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program or other medical program that meets the criteria of a medical assistant program.
Certification and Licensure:
CPR/BLS required; Medical Assistant Certification, preferred.
Work Experience:
Medical Assistant I: None

Medical Assistant II: A minimum of six (6) months experience as an entry level Medical Assistant at National Jewish Health or one (1) year recent (within the last six months active) experience from a health care organization or medical office.
