Under the direct supervision of staff pharmacists, the Pharmacy Assistant II has primary responsibilities in the unit-dose, floor stock, outpatient, billing, and purchasing areas to increase continuity in business management of the pharmacy. The Pharmacy Assistant II assists the pharmacists in dispensing medications and maintaining appropriate patient records and charges.
1. Performs dispensing and billing functions in the unit-dose drug distribution program. Unit-dose carts are accurately filed from current patient profiles. Promptly and accurately deliver medications and controlled substances to patient care areas. Medication orders are promptly and accurately entered and charged using either the pharmacy or hospital computer system. The Pharmacy Assistant II consults the pharmacist of any age specific concerns or questions.
2. Maintains all controlled substance records, ensuring discrepancies are noted, departments are notified and nursing personnel correct discrepancies within 72 hours.
3. Inspects and maintains all CORE Carts in accordance with hospital policy and procedure, ensuring seals are intact and there are no expired or missing drugs.
4. Maintains a readily retrievable filing system for all purchase invoices, billing records, and prescription files.
5. Performs dispensing and billing functions in the Outpatient Pharmacy area. Prescriptions are accurately and efficiently processed for dismissal, triage, outpatient clinic, grant, and employee patients. Prescriptions are promptly read and appropriate information is entered into the computer system to generate accurate labels, profiles, and charges. The Pharmacy Assistant consults the Pharmacist for any age specific concerns or questions.
6. Performs routine, daily maintenance and updates software to the pharmacy computer system under the supervision of the pharmacist system manager.
7. Accurately and efficiently delivers floor stock medications to and from patient care areas. Appropriate records of charges and credits are accurately maintained and filed.
8. Maintains contract compliance with various pharmacy purchasing contracts to ensure high quality pharmaceuticals are purchased at the best pricing available. Assists Pharmacy Manager in soliciting contract proposals and bids.
9. Accurately and promptly processes drug wholesaler orders, direct purchase orders and pharmacy office supply orders. Includes verification of all line items received with corresponding order, purchase order and invoice records for wholesaler and internal requisitions.
10. Maintains and uses a drug inventory management system and is responsible for performing the annual inventory of all drug items located in the pharmacy and throughout the hospital.
11. Ensures the prompt and accurate removal of recalled and outdated stock (monthly). He/she ensures the neat, clean, orderly, and appropriate stocking of the unit-dose, intravenous admixture, outpatient, and floor stock areas.
12. Monitors medication supplies and maintains an adequate inventory for all or designated areas, call shortages to on-duty pharmacist or manager.
13. Inspects nursing units, clinics, and other patient care/medication storage areas to monitor the proper storage and distribution of patient floor stock, medications, controlled drugs, and emergency medications.
14. Complies with institution confidentiality policies. Follows institution procedures for maintaining confidentiality of electronic records and disposal of hard copies.
15. Performs competencies (including age-specific competencies) as identified through the departmental competency program.
16. Performs as a back-up to staff absences and vacancies, as necessary
17. Maintains monthly quality assurance activity records, and trouble-shoots for information and availability on new or unusual items.
18. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Effective computer knowledge. Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal. Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations.
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
Certification and Licensure
Pharmacy Technician Certification required.
A minimum of two (2) years of pharmacy technician experience required.

Position is in a clinical environment. Frequent requirements may include: reading and comprehending medical literature, including basic interpretation of disease processes, medical charts, and instructions. Communication includes ability to chart vital signs and other basic information. Communication with interdisciplinary team as well as with differing ages and levels of maturity/understanding of patient and family, taking and recording telephone messages. Manual dexterity, manipulating equipment such as blood pressure kit, oximeter, spirometer. Frequently, has the need to assist a patient by moving or lifting. Considerable physical demands, requiring lifting up to 25 pounds Also involves pushing wheelchairs, opening doors and cabinets, reaching for objects. Occasionally will need to crawl in order to retrieve a fallen object for a patient. Occasional requirements may include: sitting while completing paperwork, kneeling, and squatting. Incumbent may be scheduled to work an alternate schedule to accommodate essential business needs routine travel by foot or automobile to alternate work/meeting locations, possibly during inclement weather.
Inside environmental conditions may include: The potential of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens. Has frequent exposure to infectious diseases. Occasionally, may encounter radiation from portable radiology procedures. May come into contact with various fumes/odors. Also may encounter contaminated biological waste from infectious patients. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to each employee when needed as determined by policy. Utilization of PPE is mandatory. Estimated 1500 employees in the worksite.
