General Summary
To deliver safe and appropriate routine clinical patient care within scope of practice and established policies and procedures under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.  Patient care services may include but are not limited to: assisting with clinical procedures, obtaining lab specimens, venipunctures, taking vital signs, spirometry, performing emergency CPR, care-related telephone communications, patient basic hygiene and comfort.  Responsible for patient flow, stocking rooms, and ordering supplies. Observes and learns professional nursing care processes and techniques within the Department of Nursing.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Accurately obtains and records patient vital signs, heights and weights.
2. Performs quality spirometry with consistency on approved system.
3. Ensures an efficient clinic patient flow pattern by: Monitoring master schedule to ensure patients are appropriately registered and worked up within the time frame of their appointment; Ensuring patients are placed in rooms with light system correct; Ensuring medical record and x-rays are available for patient appointment; Paging physicians when patients are ready for their visit; Escorting patients safely to other departments, (e.g. Radiology, PPU); 0rienting patients to clinic upon first visit.
4. Assists with care needs of hospitalized patients by: Assisting with treatments/wound care under supervision; Assisting with and records oral intake and output; Assisting patients in activities of daily living; Participates in assuring a complete patient record by recording activities appropriately, either in the Affinity system or on the paper chart as required.
5. Performs competencies (including age-specific competencies) as identified through the departmental competency program.  Implements care and services that recognize age-specific needs and issues for customers served.
6. Maintains equipment with daily calibrations and appropriate use.
7. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
8. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of relevant computer software.
9. Performs manual billing, error correction, photocopying, and data entry as required.
10. Performs as backup to staff absences and vacancies as necessary.
11. Under supervision of the RN, formulates & documents an individual teaching plan for assigned patients, based upon assessment of patient's, family's, and significant other's teaching needs.
12. Implements teaching plan utilizing effective individual and small group teaching skills, and National Jewish supportive materials as directed by Registered Nurse.
13. Evaluates effectiveness of teaching plan and adjusts the plan as necessary.
14. Supports National Jewish's philosophy of patient/family education.
15. Attends continuing education programs sponsored by National Jewish, manufacturer in-services and/or professional society programs, as directed
16. Performs all other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
1. Performs, as directed, safety compliance and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as needed.
2. Participates in Quality Assessment (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs, as directed.
3. Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission and all other Federal, State and Regulatory Agencies.
4. Responds promptly and sincerely to customer’s needs, requests and concerns via all communication forms using easily understood language and refraining from using inappropriate language and non-verbal gestures.
5. Maintains positive working relationships as a team player through problem solving issues, speaking positively about others, listening attentively and observing the Patient Bill of Rights and Confidentiality.
6. Increases customer service knowledge, skill and ability by participating in department and center-wide specific programs.
7. Incorporates National Jewish’s identity (Science Transforming Life®) into daily functions.  Speaks positively about the center, provides customers with prompt service, maintains a clean and safe working environment, dresses appropriately based upon National Jewish safety standards, and departmental policies and wears an ID badge visibly.
Knowledge and Skills
Incumbent must have exceptional oral and written communication skills; attention to detail and ability to multi-task; and possess strong organizational skills. Capacity to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers while maintaining confidentiality. Incumbent must be a positive, professional team player.  Must be knowledgeable in medical practices and care to assist in providing safe, quality patient care, examination, diagnostic and treatment procedures as well as medical equipment and instruments used in administering patient care; and the ability to visually assess patient condition and to utilize sight to implement care as directed.  Must have knowledge of hospital software applications and systems, including telephones.
Certification and Licensure 
Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification required.
Completion of the Junior year at an accredited college of nursing is required.  Formal Curriculum Vitae with cover letter and a minimum two letters of reference from current faculty, required.  Interns selected for this program will be required to furnish verification that they are in good academic standing and are still enrolled in the program, each semester.

Working Conditions
Position is in a clinical environment. Frequent requirements may include: reading and comprehending medical literature, including basic interpretation of disease processes, medical charts, and instructions.  Communication includes ability to chart vital signs and other basic information.  Communication with interdisciplinary team as well as with differing ages and levels of maturity/understanding of patient and family, taking and recording telephone messages.  Manual dexterity, manipulating equipment such as blood pressure kit, oximeter, spirometer.  Frequently, has the need to assist a patient by moving or lifting.  Considerable physical demands, requiring lifting up to 25 pounds Also involves pushing wheelchairs, opening doors and cabinets, reaching for objects.  Occasionally will need to crawl in order to retrieve a fallen object for a patient. Occasional requirements may include: sitting while completing paperwork, kneeling, and squatting. Incumbent may be scheduled to work an alternate schedule to accommodate essential business needs routine travel by foot or automobile to alternate work/meeting locations, possibly during inclement weather.
Environmental Conditions
Inside environmental conditions may include: The potential of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens.  Has frequent exposure to infectious diseases.  Occasionally, may encounter radiation from portable radiology procedures.  May come into contact with various fumes/odors.  Also may encounter contaminated biological waste from infectious patients.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to each employee when needed as determined by policy.  Utilization of PPE is mandatory. Estimated 1500 employees in the worksite.
