General Summary
This position greets, instructs, and directs patients and visitors. Performs blood collections, including venipuncture and micro sample collections.  Performs other laboratory procedures, including sweat collections. Delivers safe and appropriate patient care within the scope of established policies and procedures. Utilizes variety of computer software systems. 
Essential Responsibilities
1. Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture techniques using standard equipment - including vacutainer tubes, tourniquets, syringes, butterfly needles and straight needles. Reporting of any adverse reactions to Supervisor or nursing staff.
2. Preparing, processing, labeling and storing patient specimens and samples according to departmental procedures using standard techniques and equipment, for subsequent analysis and distribution of the sample to the appropriate lab areas.
3. Greet patients and visitors in a professional, prompt, courteous, and helpful manner. Utilize standard procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification; verify and record appropriate collection information on lab requisitions.
4. Complete patient ordering in LIS as needed.
5. Performs sweat collections using established procedures. Instructs patients on urine and sputum collection procedures and testing requirements.
6. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Ensuring equipment and work area is disinfected as required. Maintains supplies in work areas and notifies Supervisor immediately when supplies are needed.
7. Maintains appropriate knowledge of HIS and EMR to ensure maximum personal proficiency.
8. Provides appropriate education to patients/families utilizing effective teaching skills and National Jewish Health supportive materials as directed by Supervisor.  Supports National Jewish Health philosophy of patient/family education.
9. Attends continuing education programs sponsored by National Jewish Health, manufacturer in-services and/or professional society programs, as directed.
10. Performs transportation of lab samples to main lab when necessary.
11. Assists in the orientation of new staff members.
12. Performs as backup Phlebotomy Concierge as needed. Not to exceed 20% of job function
13. Performs all other duties as assigned.

2. Participates in Quality Assessment (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs, as directed.
3. Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission and all other Federal, State and Regulatory Agencies.
4. Responds promptly and sincerely to customer’s needs, requests and concerns via all communication forms using easily understood language and refraining from using inappropriate language and non-verbal gestures.
5. Maintains positive working relationships as a team player through problem solving issues, speaking positively about others, listening attentively and observing the Patient Bill of Rights and Confidentiality.
6. Increases customer service knowledge, skill and ability by participating in department and institution-wide specific programs.
7. Incorporates National Jewish’s identity (Science Transforming Life®) into daily functions.  Speaks positively about the institution, provides customers with prompt service, maintains a clean and safe working environment, dresses appropriately based upon National Jewish safety standards, and departmental policies and wears an ID badge visibly.
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; and PC skills. Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language.
High school diploma or equivalent required.   College level courses in Biology, related life sciences and/or medical terminology is preferred.
Certification and Licensure
Current CPR certification required. Current Phlebotomy Certification preferred (documentation of successful completion of a formal program is preferred). Phlebotomy Technician, PBT (ASCP) preferred.
Work Experience
A minimum of three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience in a medical office or other healthcare setting preferred.

Working Conditions
Position is in a clinical environment. Frequent requirements may include: reading and comprehending medical literature, including basic interpretation of disease processes, medical charts, and instructions.  Communication includes ability to chart vital signs and other basic information.  Communication with interdisciplinary team as well as with differing ages and levels of maturity/understanding of patient and family, taking and recording telephone messages.  Manual dexterity, manipulating equipment such as blood pressure kit, oximeter, spirometer.  Frequently, has the need to assist a patient by moving or lifting.  Considerable physical demands, requiring lifting up to 25 pounds.  Also involves pushing wheelchairs, opening doors and cabinets, reaching for objects.  Occasionally will need to crawl in order to retrieve a fallen object for a patient. Occasional requirements may include: sitting while completing paperwork, kneeling, and squatting. Incumbent may be scheduled to work an alternate schedule to accommodate essential business needs; routine travel by foot or automobile to alternate work/meeting locations may be required, possibly during inclement weather.
Environmental Conditions
Inside environmental conditions may include: The potential of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens.  Has frequent exposure to infectious diseases.  Occasionally, may encounter radiation from portable radiology procedures.  May come into contact with various fumes/odors.  Also may encounter contaminated biological waste from infectious patients.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to each employee when needed as determined by policy.  Utilization of PPE is mandatory. Estimated 1700 employees in the worksite.
