Position Summary
The Rapid Response RN responds and partners with the Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) on all consult, codes and rapid response situations throughout the hospital.  The Rapid Response RN functions autonomously in critical situations, assigns tasks to those in attendance and ensures the safety and wellbeing of the patient.  The Rapid Response RN is a clinical resource for the institution in non-emergent consult situations. The Rapid Response RN uses specialized knowledge and may perform the activities of administration, supervision, delegation and evaluation of nursing practice as delegated.  
Essential Duties
  1. Leads responses to all emergent or consult calls and codes throughout the institution. 
  2. Demonstrates clinical competence in routine assessment and interventions as evidenced through the departmental competency program.
  3. Utilizes clinical opportunities to teach/guide staff in appropriate interventions in patient care.  
  4. Assists with and at times may oversee admissions, transfers and discharges during shift. 
  5. Addresses patient triage phone calls and provide appropriate clinical intervention.  Conducts procedure call-backs and completes medication refills.
  6. Manages the emergency preparedness process for clinical areas.  Runs mock codes for main campus and satellite offices.
  7. Collaborates with the nursing staff, medical director(s) of various units and multidisciplinary health care team to provide cost-effective, quality patient care delivery that is consistent with national standards and guidelines.
  8. Participates in quality improvement in nursing by directing appropriate activities and by encouraging staff to develop and contribute to QI programs.
Other Duties
  1. Provides administrative support to clinical staff as requested.  Acts as staff back-up covering for meetings and assists with patient care in all areas as needed.  
  2. Assists with RN Lead coverage due to illness, absences, and vacations as needed. 
  3. Serves as the RN clinical lead during weekend shifts.
  4. Incident command leader until appropriate Senior Leader is available to take over command.
  1.   5. Informing and Communicating:  Clearly conveying information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message [SPP 9].
  6. Patient Relations: Meeting patient and patient family needs; taking responsibility for a patient’s safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes; using appropriate interpersonal techniques to resolve difficult patient situations and regain patient confidence.
  7. Problem Solving: Uses issue identification, data relation and comparison, pattern recognition and information gathering to create analyses and make recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Work Experience
3 years recent (within the last 4 years) adult critical care experience as a licensed RN required.  Recent emergency department experience highly preferred (current or within the last 2-5 years).  General pediatric experience highly preferred.    
Special Training, Certification or Licensure
Current Colorado  RN License, BLS required, ACLS required, PALS required (within 90 days of hire)
