We are looking for a Staff Registered Nurse (RN) for our National Jewish Health Main Campus Oncology and IVIG Clinic, can it be you?  We would like someone who independently plans and provides specialized nursing care for patients and families in an oncology practice setting utilizing a systematic approach incorporating assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.  Practices in accordance with physician orders, established NJH policies and procedures, Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and the values stated in the National Jewish Health and the Department of Nursing vision and mission. Provides nursing services within the scope of the RN as defined by the Colorado Board of Nursing.  Assists others in developing their skills, knowledge, and abilities.

What does the Oncology Division do? The Oncology Division is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up and monitoring of individuals with known or suspected cancer. We diagnose and treat all adult cancers, with emphasis on cancer of the: lungs (thoracic), head and neck (ears, mouth, throat, and sinuses) or stomach and intestinal (esophageal, stomach, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, colon, rectal, anal) cancers. We are pleased to participate in your evaluation at any point. We can review abnormal X-rays, CTs or PET scans. We offer state-of-the-art therapy for patients diagnosed with cancer. Our Oncology team also is available to give second opinions regarding a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.

Many years ago we added gastrointestinal (GI) specialists to care for our patients who also developed those issues. Our GI program has grown and now includes cancer screening and care.

Additionally, our Division now treats all types of adult cancers, including blood and bone cancers, prostate cancer, brain tumors, breast cancer, and leukemias to name just a few.

Each patient has a multidisciplinary team to help them through every step of the cancer journey. Team members include lung specialists, medical oncology experts, pathologists specifically trained in cancers of the lung, expert radiologists capable of interpreting all types of radiologic images, radiation oncologists to deliver needed radiation therapy, surgeons and dedicated nurses. This expert group, through frequent meetings to review patient progress, ensures that state-of-the-art care is provided to everyone.

Essential Duties    

  1. Assessment:  Collects pertinent data and information relative to the patient’s and family’s health or situation.  Demonstrates proficient, skillful and rapid assessment in triage of patient problems and needs in the outpatient clinic, specialty care area, telephone health services setting, and/or ongoing care [Standard of Practice (SP) 1].
  2. Analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential problems and issues. Prioritizing a focus on wellness, health promotion, chronic disease management, and disease prevention [SP 2].
  3. Identifies expected outcomes for an individualized plan for the patient/family, recognizing that the patient and family are in control regarding the choice and compliance with a care regimen [SP 3].
  4. Develops, intervenes, evaluates a plan of care in collaboration with patients, families, and other team members identifying actual and potential patient care needs.  Updates the plan of care and documents in the approved format.  Documents nursing activity and the patient’s response to nursing intervention. [SP 4].
  5. Ensures the plan of care reflects the cultural, spiritual, intellectual, age, educational, and psychosocial differences of individual patients, families, groups, and communities [SP 4].
  6. Implements identified plan.  Establishes competencies and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients in accordance with National Jewish Health Policies and Procedures [SP 5].
  7. Conducts time-limited, episodic, individual nurse-patient encounters and interventions and frequently establishes long-term relationships with patients, families, and caregivers [SP 5].  
  8. Manages telephone communications including: assessing patient needs over the phone; providing appropriate advice, directing patient to appropriate level of care: communicating status to the physician: addressing prescription requests: documenting actions in approved format [SP 5].
  9. Coordination: facilitates access to appropriate medical and health care, nursing consultation /intervention, follow-up, and surveillance [SP 5a].
  10. Teaching: Provides patient education using methods and approaches recognizing the specific needs and concerns of the individual patient; supports the patient and caregiver (s) to become informed customers about the options, costs, risks, and benefits of health care services [SP 5b].  
  11. Recommends evidence-based practice and research strategies to improve nursing quality.

Minimum Qualifications

Education    

Graduation from an Accredited School of Nursing required; BSN preferred.


Work Experience
    
A minimum of 2 years of recent and related Registered Nurse (RN) experience required.  Different patient care areas may require specific skillset experience.


Special Training, Certification or Licensure    

Current Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) License and current CPR/BLS certification required. ACLS, PALS, and/or ONS certifications as required for specific unit coverage.
